Most businesses have put there faith in backups
that don't even come close to backing up the files they need. Here are
some real life examples:

Business 1: At midnight the operator replaced the tape 5 days a week
in the server. (The backup had not ran for the past 5 months.)

Business 2: At midnight the operator replaced the tape 5 days a week.
On 3 separate occasions a restore of tape was needed. Out of 5 tapes all
3 times only 4 tapes were good backups.

Business 3: The business had 5 tapes. Every Friday it made a complete
backup and erased the previous week's backup. Then 4 days a week it made
a backup of only the files that had changed. Problem, if Friday's
tape was bad, there was NO way to restore over 90% of the data on the server.
If a complete restore was needed on Thursday ALL 5 tapes would have to
be good!

Business 4-6: They had tape backups and software and tapes that were
not compatible to use in any other tape backup currently on the market.
If the tape backup unit died with the server so did ALL backups.

A company has been backing up Quick Books onto CD ROM's. HP computer
burns up. We put in new computer, installed Quick Books and every
CD ROM for 5 years had nothing on them. The company lose 3 companies
data & 5 years of work!!

THE ULTIMATE EXAMPLE
The following is an example of a business in the area and really
bad case scenario. The business has one server and 20 work stations.
A system we built over the years. We are going to say that for this example
they get hit by a direct lightning strike and all the computers fry.
It is Monday night at 3:00 AM when the fire department calls the
owner and informs him of the minor fire damage.
The owner calls Butch Walker, the owner of ISC, at 3:15 AM at home
to describe the disaster. Butch is there 30 minutes later to access
the damage. After 45 minutes, Butch calls and meets another employee
back at ISC. At 5:30 AM, six temporary computers and one server come
back and are unloaded at the site of the lightning strike. The employee
who did the backup last night, brings in the off-site backup. At
7:30 AM, the server and the two workstations necessary for the daily business
(invoicing, customer tracking, etc.) are running. At 8:00 the General
manager is back up and running. The other 7 full time employees come
in to work and start helping with clean up. At 9:30 the two other department
managers have computers up and running. The accountant is up and
running at 10:30 AM. The rest of the part time employees come in
to help with clean up.
At 10:00 AM the next day, the parts for 21 new computers arrive by
truck on the business' site. Thursday all the business is back up
and running normally, except for the dumpster outside and the slight smell
of smoke.

EXAMPLE 2
A person brings in a Dell laptop they bought off EBay a year before.
The hardrive was dead. Put in a new hardrive that was compatible
with the Dell and a copy of Windows. (The restore disk did not work.)
Attempted to download the drivers off Dell's website. None of the
drivers worked in a fresh copy of Windows. LAPTOP BECOMES DUMPSTER
FILLER! If they had let us make a backup copy of the computer when
they bought it, they would have had better use of their $800 than one year!

EXAMPLE 3
A business in Wheeling calls ISC. The Assistant Business Manager's
computer is not working. After 3 minutes on the phone it is determined

manager's computer is back up and running, configured to access server(s),
corp. email, local & network printers, etc. IF

EXAMPLE 4
An employee at ISC did something dumb and wiped the Windows from
one of the shop computers. One hour later the same computer complete
with approximately 100 programs is back up and running. That time included
the time it took to download the antivirus updates from the internet.
(By the way, the employee went to another computer in the shop and continued
doing what they were doing before the accident while the restore was taking
place.)

We were able to salvage the accounting files off his hardrive. So he

had a way to keep an ongoing backup of the system on the hardrive.
