Do you need an email server or tired of all the false promises or problems with you current ISP? The major advantage to in-house is that email from employee to employee does not go out to the web and back to an in-house email account all in plain text.  If you are an accounting firm, any form of medical company or other service company that has lots of confidential material you may be violating many various federal laws every day without your own email server.

The Firewall's email server is a Postfix & Amavisd & Spam Assassin combo with Clam Antivirus:
Send Mail is most common taking 80% market share running on some form of Linux or UNIX (this primarily is that it was the first one and a major pain to work with.)
Qmail next at 9%  (Gmail)
Postfix varies at around 7% (you know this as Yahoo Mail)
(The largest group of programmers in the world who basically make up what is know as "Open Source" use the same email server configuration as we produce.  (freshmeat.net & sourceforge.net).
Procmail is next probably 1%.
About 15 others take up the 3%.  (Microsoft Exchange has never been mentioned by name in any survey I found).

Cost for up to 30 users with antivirus & anti-spam including software and configuration approximately $599.

Advantages:

• All correspondence from employee to employee never leaves the building and is even virus scanned in between.
• Certain users can be restricted from receive incoming email.
• Certain users can be restricted from sending outgoing email.
• Certain users' outgoing email can be restricted down to only certain domains.
• Email can be set up with any POP3 client like Outlook or Mozilla Mail.
• Web based Email can be accessed by any browser from anywhere; in house or from the road.
• Anti-phishing.
• Spam Assassin is install, absolutely the most used SPAM detection system with various details at 80-90% market.  It is the most unlikely to give false positives at less that 1%.
• MailScanner is installed. One of two existent Mail Header scanners in the world and it only runs on Linux or a few Unix. The second is defunk.
• MailScanner also kills any form of "NEW virus" because it strips or disables executable attachments.
• Dual virus scanning is optional.
• With the present system adding a new employee cost you nothing. If you had Microsoft Server with Exchange then $110 per employee.
• Clam AntiVirus is the number one Linux virus scanner 80%. Fprot is next at 15%.

Symantec is trying so hard to get some of the pie on the new 10.2 CD there are 6 versions for Linux.

Do you have confidential material or messages you would like to get to your customers but because of some HIPAA regulation or "Privacy Act" can not do such.  You can set up your customer with an email account and let them view it securely on you own server.  (May require extra configuration costs.)
